Germany's most prestigious research funding award goes to four women and six men

Berlin/Jena. The recipients of Germany’s most prestigious research funding award have been announced: the main committee of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) selected four women and six men for the 2025 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. These individuals were chosen from 142 nominations by the relevant selection committee. The ten awardees include two from the humanities and social sciences, four from the life sciences, three from the natural sciences, and one from engineering sciences. Each recipient will receive €2.5 million in prize money, which they can use over a period of up to seven years to support their research, free from bureaucratic constraints.

Among the distinguished recipients is Professor Dr. Volker Haucke, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) and Director of the Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology in Berlin. He is recognized for his groundbreaking research on lipid signaling and synaptic transmission, advancing our understanding of neuronal function and paving the way for novel therapeutic approaches, including cancer treatments.

The Leibniz Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony on March 19, 2025, in Berlin. The event will be preceded by a celebration of the program’s 40th anniversary, providing an opportunity for all past laureates to connect and exchange ideas.
