The time has come again on November 25th 2011: For the fourth time the “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften” (Long night of sciences) takes place in Jena. From 18:00 h to 24:00 h visitors are invited to go on a journey of discovery in Jena’s scientific community.
This year’s opening event takes place at the Institute of Photonic Technology on Beutenberg Campus. Ralph Caspers, known for TV programmes such as “Wissen macht Ah!” and "Die Sendung mit der Maus", will host a colourful science show from 17:00 to 18:00 h.
Starting at 18:00 h the doors of the institutes and firms on Beutenberg campus will be open and the Leibniz Institute for Age Research - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) invites interested visitors.
The scientists of the FLI answer general questions concerning research on ageing and talk about current projects at the institute. Visitors can learn something about research on Alzheimer‘s disease, cancer and osteoporosis at FLI, find out what genome analysis contributes to ageing research or how the hormonal balance changes in old age.
Numerous posters, talks, films, laboratory tours and presentations as well as many interactive games inform the visitors about molecular biological research at FLI and offer fascinating insights into this interesting, multifaceted subject area.
Everyone interested - old or young - is cordially invited!
PROGRAMME (Excerpt)
How does it feel to be old? [Simulation of old age]
18.00 - 24.00 h
People in our society get older, life expectancy increases more and more. But how does it feel to be old? What ailments occur and make everyday things difficult? Go on your own personal journey of discovery!
Growing old without ailments? [Posters, talks, lab tours, games, films etc.]
18.00 - 24.00 h
People in our society get older, life expectancy increases more and more. The biggest wish is to stay healthy to an old age. The scientists of FLI try to find out how this can be done.
Stay fit - play a game! [Memory game]
18.00 - 24.00 h
Young and fit? With this memory game you can find out how well your grey matter (still) works. With every pair of pictures that you find, you will receive new interesting pieces of information about ageing research at FLI.
Risk a look into the future! [Ageing software]
18.00 - 24.00 h
Are you curious? Then risk a look into the future! With a special ageing software we can show you how you could look in a few year’s time. Let us surprise you!
Enter the molecular microcosm! [Laboratory tour]
19.00, 20.00, 21.00, 22.00 and 23.00 h (max. 10 persons; duration ca. 35 min)
How can extremely powerful magnets be used to resolve or visualize biomolecular structures and their interaction? Experience fascinating insights into the biological microcosm.
What happens within a cell when it ages? [Talk]
19.00, 20.00, 21.00, 22.00 and 23.00 h (max. 10 persons; seminar room 148)
The exploration of the principles of ageing became increasingly important within the last years. The work on isolated animal cells has contributed substantially to new insights in this field of research.
How can fish and mice be of help in ageing research? [Lab tour]
19.00, 20.00, 21.00, 22.00 and 23.00 h (max. 10 persons; duration ca. 45 min)
How and why do we age? - a question that cannot be completely answered yet. How model organisms can help answering this question, will be shown at FLI.
