After 3640 kilometres on German and Austrian rivers and stops in 35 cites, this year’s tour of the exhibition ship “MS Wissenschaft” ended in Berlin-Mitte on September 30th, 2011.

The converted inland transport ship is part of the initiative “Wissenschaft im Dialog” (Science in dialogue). In the year of health research it showed the exhibition „Neue Wege in der Medizin“ (New ways in medicine). Around 72,000 visitors went on board the ship and acquainted themselves with recent developments in health research, alone 420 school classes made use of this cost-free offer.

The exhibition with join-in activities was divided into five sections. It offered around 30 stations which showed what scientists are working on in order to recognise and cure diseases. The Leibniz Institute for Age Research with its exhibits on the subject "Alt werden ohne Gebrechen? - Einem Menschheitstraum auf der Spur" (Growing old without ailments - chasing a dream of mankind) aims to educate the visitors about specific topics in research on ageing. The visitors could also experience what it feels like when the eyesight deteriorates in old age or the mobility of the hands is impaired. The memory game gave all the visitors the opportunity to show how mentally fit they are.

Selected exhibits which were shown on the ship during the tour, among them also FLI’s exhibits, are now displayed in the exhibition "Abenteuer Wissenschaft: Der Mensch. Version 1.0" at the House of Science of the University of Graz/Austria from Oct 1st, 2011 to March 31st, 2012.
