Forsche Schüler Tag at the Beutenberg - Curiosity meets science!

News

On April 3, 2025, the nationwide “Girls‘ and Boys’ Day” took place on the Beutenberg Campus as the “Forsche Schüler Tag”. 17 students from grades 8 to 12 - including one exchange student from the USA - came to the Leibniz Institute on Aging to dive into the world of science.

The "Forsche Schüler Tag" at the FLI focused on ageing research: What is being researched at the institute? Why is it so important - for each and every one of us, but also for society? And, of course, the students were invited to join in and try things out!

A colorful mix of interesting lectures and numerous hands-on stations were waiting for the young people. They learned how the microbiome in and on our bodies can influence our health, what role genes play in the sexual development of killifish and how modern approaches could help treat nerve diseases.

The interactive stations were a real hands-on experience: pipetting like the experts for a PCR analysis, experience your own ageing with age simulations, use LEGO building blocks to understand therapeutic approaches to healing nerve diseases and take a look inside the labs on a tour of the institute. Our trainers and trainees were also there to answer questions about apprenticeship opportunities at the FLI.

The result? The young people were very curious and had a lot of fun, learned new things and gained exciting insights into ageing research. Hopefully, this day has awakened an interest in science and research in some of them. We certainly had a lot of fun - and we are already looking forward to the next "Forsche Schüler Tag" event!
